The Sacred Heart Spirituality Center is a living expression of the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ). Continuing the legacy of our foundress, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat—who established the Society in France in 1800.

The buildings of the Sacred Heart Spirituality Center were designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kenzo Tange and completed in 1967. The ship-like structure reflects a harmonious integration of geography, wind patterns, seismic considerations, and landscape design. It has long been admired as a landmark study for architecture students and scholars alike. Originally established as Sacred Heart Women’s University, the site was transitioned into a spirituality center in 1970.

A Temple of Intellect

Originally built as the campus for Sacred Heart Women’s College, this building nurtured young minds until the graduation of its second class. The history of revealing God’s love through education is etched into these very walls.

 • A Sacred Transformation: Today, these halls serve as a Spirituality Center and a Convent. The passion for academic learning has blossomed into a lifelong devotion to spiritual growth, healing, and the sharing of grace.

• Architectural Landmark: Completed in 1967 as Tange’s first overseas project, the building is a masterpiece of Brutalist and Metabolist design—a historic milestone in Taiwan’s architectural history.

A Space Created for Prayer and Reflection

Known as the “Ark on the Hill,” the building is shaped like a vessel resting on the hillside, overlooking the majestic Tamsui River and Guanyin Mountain. Its terraces and walkways blend seamlessly with the forest, creating a peaceful path where nature and humanity meet to provide a simple yet profound space for prayer and contemplation.
